How Are People Managing Alpha-gal Syndrome? Early Treatment Trends From Our Patient Registry

One of the questions we hear most often is, "What medications are other people taking?" Closely followed by, "Does SAAT work?"
To begin answering those questions, Tick Bite Data launched a Treatment Experience Survey. While these findings are based on patient-reported experiences and should not be interpreted as clinical evidence, they provide an early look at how people with Alpha-gal Syndrome are managing their condition.
With 83 participants having completed the survey so far, some interesting patterns are beginning to emerge. As participation continues to grow, these trends will become even more meaningful.
The Most Commonly Used Medications
One reassuring finding is that many individuals with Alpha-gal Syndrome report using antihistamines as part of their daily symptom management.
The three most commonly reported antihistamines to date are:
Pepcid (Famotidine)
Zyrtec (Cetirizine)
Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)
While every person with Alpha-gal Syndrome is different, these medications are being reported by many members of the community as part of their treatment approach. As always, medications should only be taken under the guidance of your healthcare provider, particularly because reactions and underlying medical conditions can vary from person to person.
What Are Patients Reporting After SAAT?
SAAT continues to generate significant interest within the Alpha-gal community, but patient experiences are far from identical.
Some respondents describe their treatment as life-changing, reporting improvements in both food tolerance and quality of life. Others report more modest improvements, while a smaller number indicate little change or worsening symptoms.
At this stage, our survey does not answer whether SAAT "works." Instead, it helps us understand the wide range of experiences people are reporting.
Which Symptoms Do People Say Improved?
Among respondents who reported improvement after SAAT, improvements were not limited to mammalian food tolerance.
Participants also reported improvements involving:
Brain fog
Fatigue
Anxiety
Depression
Joint pain
Muscle pain
Rapid heart rate
Gastrointestinal symptoms
Hives
Sleep quality
Dairy tolerance
Mammalian meat tolerance
While these reports are encouraging, they remain patient observations rather than proof that SAAT directly improves these symptoms. Continued participation will help us better understand whether these patterns remain consistent over time.
What Causes Symptoms to Return?
Another question we frequently hear is, "If someone improves, what causes their symptoms to come back?"
The strongest trend emerging from the survey so far points to additional tick bites as the most commonly reported trigger for symptom recurrence.
Several participants also described symptom recurrence following major physical illnesses or significant life stressors. These observations are still preliminary, but they represent important areas for continued research as more responses are collected.
Every Survey Makes the Data Stronger
Treatment research for Alpha-gal Syndrome is still in its early stages, and every new response helps improve our understanding.
Today, we're beginning to see trends. Tomorrow, with hundreds or even thousands of responses, those trends may help guide future research and provide valuable insights for both patients and healthcare providers.
